Rain-on-snow floods are a fascinating hydromete-orological phenomenon. Their severity depends not only on the magnitude of the precipitation, but also on the elevation of the freezing level and the water equivalent and areal extent of the antecedent snowpack. The necessary juxtaposition of these causative factors creates interesting challenges for both flood prediction and flood risk assessment.
