Lignite Mine for MPC’s IGCC Plant Wins Environmental Permit

(MPC) Kemper County integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant won permit approval from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). According to a June 13 report from the Associated Press, the Sierra Club and some local residents had been fighting against the permit now granted to NACCO Industries subsidiary Liberty Fuels. The opponents claim the mine could lead to pollution run-off into streams that feed nearby Okatibee Lake and the Pascagoula River.
