New facility for developing food-processing technologies

The Georgia Institute of Technology has opened a new facility for collaborative technology development to make food processing safer and more efficient. The facility took 8 yr to build at a cost of 9.4 million dollars and is 36,000 ft~2. It houses offices and research laboratories for automation, information, and environmental technology development; a 4,300 ft", high-bay prototyping area; a 48-seat auditorium; and a large conference room for industrial and organizational meetings and events. There is also an interactive exhibit in the lower lobby to entertain and inform visiting K-12 student groups, and others, about the growing role technology is playing in foodand poultry-processing operations. The new building is headquarters . for the Food Processing Technology Division of the Georgia-Tech-Re- -search Institute(GTRI), the non-profit, applied-research arm of Georgia Tech. GTRI conducts industrial research under the Agricultural Technology Research Program (ATRP) arid Georgia's Traditional Industries Program for Food Processing, which 4s managed through the Food Processing Advisory Council (FoodPAC).
