Linc Seeks U.S. Patent on Underground Coal Gasification Process

The U.S. Patent Office announced November 28 that Australia-based Linc Energy is seeking a patent on an underground coal gasification (UCG) process. According to the patent applicant, the scheme includes an “ignition apparatus configured to ignite an underground coal seam. The ignition apparatus [includes] an ignition system, a positioning system, a sensor and a controller. “The ignition system comprises ignition means and an ignition tool for igniting the underground coal seam from within the well channel or well liner encasing the well channel.
