European power producer E.On and Siemens announced Feb. 19 that they are teaming up on tests of a new CO2 solvent capture scheme at a coal-fired power plant. "Our solvent is not chilled ammonia but a very environmentally friendly amino acid salt," Siemens spokesperson Gerda Gottschick told Gasification News. The amino-acid salt has several advantages including: no thermodynamic solvent emissions; not inflammable; not explosive; odorless and no inhalation risk.
