Liquid-nitrogen-ejector technology packs just the right punch for food-and-beverage packaging. Although food and beverage manufacturers have long used gaseous nitrogen in their packaging applications, distributors should make them aware of technologies that stand to make their processes more profitable. For example, devices such as liquid nitrogen injectors used in beverage bottling are now well-suited for food packaging. The devices save manufacturers money by reducing excessive nitrogen-gas use. In the past, bottling companies could not package noncarbonated beverages in plastic bottles because of lack of internal pressure to give them rigidity. With the advent of liquid-nitrogen-injector technology, companies "inject" a small drop of liquid nitrogen into the bottle before it is capped. Once die bottle is capped, the micro-controlled amount of nitrogen then rapidly boils into a gas, creating the necessary internal pressure and bottle stiffness.
