Preface to Special Issue on Volcanic-Hosted Massive Sulfide Deposits and their Geological Settings in the Bathurst Mining Camp, New Brunswick

The first volume dedicated to the geology and volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC) was one of the first issues of Exploration and Mining Geology back in 1992. Although considerable amounts of interesting and excellent research in the BMC preceded this volume, the complexity of the BMC still made it quite difficult to unravel the many aspects related to the setting and genesis of these deposits. As one of the giant VHMS districts in the world, Bathurst has always been an area of interest to explorationists and academics alike. Almost 15 years later, this volume tries to bring together in a multidisciplinary way selected detailed mineral deposits research in the Bathurst Mining Camp and related areas, which builds upon and complements the earlier research efforts. Specifically, detailed examination of certain deposits or belts in this special issue (Fig. 1) has helped to further develop our understanding of the controls on VHMS mineralization in those areas, and possibly elsewhere in the BMC and similar VHMS districts.
