PELAN (Pulsed Elemental Analysis with Neutron)is a material classification system for the identification of explosives,vehicle bombs,chemical weapons materials,radiological-based materials,unexploded ordnance,drugs,and other contraband.PELAN'S probe emits short pulses of neutrons that penetrate an object and interact with the nuclei of the chemical elements in the object.Since the pulsed neutron source is electronic,the system is light and easy to transport.From the nuclear interactions,each chemical element emits characteristic gamma-rays that are the "fingerprints"of each element.By understanding the elemental composition of threat material,PELAN is able to automatically differentiate and classify these suspect targets.
