Using Edinger-Westphal (EW) and carbachol stimulated accommodation, He et al. (2013, Exp Eye Res, http://dx.doi.org/10. 1016/jexer.2013.05.017) measured the change over time in accommodation of both eyes of 2 rhesus monkeys. Over 68 months, the decrease in EW stimulated accommodative amplitude was significantly different between eyes with a decrease of 7.00 D, 3.33 D, 4.63 D and 2.03 D while carbachol stimulated accommodative amplitude increased 0.18 D and 0.49 D over the same time period. The authors attribute the inconsistency between the two techniques to possible eye movement, contact lens movement, a shift in the EW stimulating electrodes or shifts in the axis used to measure refraction. These were all uncontrolled variables in their study.
