Cultivation of strawberries in Germany and Belgium.

The results of a survey on strawberry production in different areas of Germany and Belgium, carried out in 1987 and 1996, are presented. In all areas, the cultivar Elsanta was the most popular (85-90% of the area under cultivation). Quality parameters of marketing organisations and customers are based on the fruit characteristics of this cultivar. No big change in the range of cultivars grown is expected in the near future. Planting material comprised mainly frigo plants in Rhineland and Weser-Emsareas; bare-rooted plants were preferred in Nordbaden and Belgium. Field cultivation dominated in all areas, although 19% of production in Belgium was under glass (compared with 1% in Germany). In Rhineland and Weser-Ems areas, single rows were preferred, whereas double rows were preferred in Nordbaden and Belgium. Fungal diseases posed a big problem in all areas of production. Mostly foreign labour was used to harvest fruits in Germany and Belgium. The number of labourers at disposal will determine theextent of German and Belgium strawberry production in the future.
