The competition to gain higher specialist training (HST) places continues to be fierce. The scoring system used to shortlist applicants takes into account publications and presentations at relevant meetings. Having completed basic surgical training and gained a diploma from one of the royal colleges, attention now turns in earnest to preparing the CV for application for an HST post. This is the stage when the importance of publications becomes all too apparent. Most HST posts will require publications to be in print or at least accepted as opposed to submitted or 'in preparation'.
