Traxx blazes new trails in western Canada: A family business successfully transitions into a corporate enterprise

Traxx Coach Lines, Medicine Hat, AB, Canada, has worked through several transitions since it began as Redcliff Bus Lines in 1932. First as a taxi service that ran between the communities of Redcliff and Medicine Hat before the company launched its school bus operation in 1947, transporting students along the same route. The school bus division grew and eventually split into two entities Redcliff and Totem to serve separate districts. The two re-merged as Totem Transportation in 1988. Today, still evolving, Traxx incorporates inbound and outbound charters, school bus and industrial contract work. While running school buses, company owners Dave Fischer and Ken Vanwert, flirted with charter motorcoach tours in the 1960s and 1970s. However, they said at the time any further expansion into charter service would have meant replacing the existing fleet with newer coaches and they simply did not want to incur that expense.
