A recent extension to the Hong Kong underground system is benefiting from improved safety thanks to Megolon~R S540, a fire resistant protective compound from Scapa Polymerics. Megolon S540 was selected by Alcatel to protect the 200km of fibre optic communications and data cables which carry vital control and signalling data. The company says that the compound is unique in swelling to form a cohesive char on burning, preventing the further spread of fire and ensuring essential signals can continue to be transmitted. Chosen for its high Limiting Oxygen Index and Melt Flow Rate of 9g/10 minutes, Megolon S540 is specially designed for cables that need to meet stringent fire test specifications.
