摘要

On September, 2004, the Third International Conference "Phase Transformations and Strength of Crystals," in memory of prominent Russian expert in metal physics, Academician Georgii Vyacheslavovich Kurdyumov, was held in Chernogolovka town. Kurdyumov played a key role in stating of the problem of diffusion-less phase transformations as a general problem of condensed-matter physics. It was proved in the works by Kurdyumov and his numerous talented pupils that martensitic transformation is characteristic not only of steels but belong to a more general type of phase transitions occurring, along with metallic alloys, in ceramics, fer-roelectrics, and other types of crystals. Kur-dyumov's works made a great contribution to the physics of strength and the theory of viscous and brittle fracture. The scientific papers published in this issue present the most important materials reported at the conference and reflect, in our opinion, the main tendencies in the development of the theory of phase transformations and strength of crystals, stated in the works by Academician Kurdyumov.
