The necessity to keep the buses running is the same for transit agencies as it is for private motorcoach companies. Basic maintenance routines are similar and the key for both are to know what will break when and to have replacement parts on hand or be able to get them PDQ. The differences, of course, lay in a transit agency's considerably greater number of vehicles and larger parts inventories. Valley Metro is the regional transit system in the greater Phoenix, AZ, area that local governments joined to fund. A number of private companies work to provide service to Valley Metro passengers. Veolia Transportation manages the East Mesa Valley Metro maintenance facility and provides fixed route and paratransit services in Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix. From this facility Veolia's Mark Nicholson, vice president, maintenance and safety, oversees parts procurement for a segment of the Valley Metro fleet that includes 156 fixed route transit buses, 63 pararansit buses and vans and 30 non-revenue vehicles from hybrid diesel-electric to CNG.
