Telematics has been around since 1997, but a variety of trends - including lower costs for hardware and advanced technology-enablers such as speech recognition and wireless LAN connectivity - has put the industry on the verge of explosive growth. As cars become moving computers, Cannon says it is well positioned to go along for the ride. Telematics derives from two other words-telecommunications and informatics - and is being used to describe the expanding amount of technology now being installed in cars to allow drivers and passengers to receive voice and data communication. Car makers are now equipping their vehicles with hands-free wireless systems that connect drivers with 'advisers' who can provide directions or even make restaurant reservations. On-board systems use internet access and GPS technology to provide realtime traffic reports and dashboard maps that turn with the car.
