Introduction to the special issue of Experimental Neurology on Alzheimer's disease.

The search for a broad, deep and detailed understanding of the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has provoked an explosion of scientific literature in the past two decades. The cornerstone for this research has been the elucidation of genes pre-disposing to or causing Alzheimer's disease as well as the defining pathology first seen by Alois Alzheimer in 1906. This approach has ultimately led to a focus on multiple aspects of two proteins, beta amyloid peptide (abeta) and the microtubule associated protein tau. In this special issue of Experimental Neurology, we turn our attention to the current knowledge of these Alzheimer's disease related genes, and in doing so we uncover new findings about their relationship to the disease.
