Tactile displays promise to improve the information-processing capacity of operators, especially when used in conjunction with visual and auditory displays. In this article, we describe current applications and future directions in tactile cuing. As system operators' visual and auditory senses become more saturated, it is essential to find ways to enhance information processing. One solution is to incorporate the sense of touch into display systems. Whereas visual and auditory displays have been the subject of extensive research and design refinements, the same cannot be said of tactile displays.
