As steel-making quality improves, producers need better methods of measuring the content of internal defects. These defects have an effect on the performance of steels in sophisticated applications such as bearing designs. At Ovako Steel, which supplies SKF with the majority of the bearing steel it requires, researchers have been developing combinations of testing and measurement techniques that provide a better way of establishing the type of defects and their influence in causing fatigue failure. The combination of optical emission spectrometry (OES) and high-frequency, high-precision ultrasonic techniques is a step forward in the analysis of the content, size distribution and composition of defects.
