The history of space astronomy is usually written from the perspec-tive of the remarkable scientific findings garnered by space astronomers andthe ways these findings have enriched and guided new views of the universe.This paper examines some aspects of the history of space astronomy in theearly years of NASA, but takes patronage, management and control as its keyissues.
