Reducing Risk in System Design Through Human-Systems Integration

HSI, long in use in the military domain, can make systems safer, less expensive, and more widely accepted in any domain. SYSTEMS OF ALL TYPES IN A WIDE RANGE of work domains involve humans in some way, whether as a component within the system or as a user. Understanding the way humans operate with the rest of the system - human-systems integration (HSI) - is crucial in the successful and efficient design of these systems. The goal of this article is to provide examples that demonstrate the risks of a lack of HSI in system design and the ways that risk is reduced through HSI.
