Aplanned maintenance programme is something that has to be considered in terms of a system's life cycle costs. In the early years of an installation, when it is reasonable to expect that a breakdown or system failure is likely to be infrequent, planned maintenance costs are likely to be higher than those for corrective repairs. However, as a system ages, that position can be reversed with the need for repairs becoming more frequent and the cost, therefore, rising. With planned maintenance contributing to the efficient performance and lifespan of a system, its benefits can, in the long term, outweigh the costs. As well as reducing downtime, an effective maintenance programme will increase the safety and reliability of a system, ensure that energy savings are maximised and increase service life.
