GERMANY Earnings from coatings at BASF, the German chemicals giant, declined in the first quarter due to higher fixed costs, even as raw material costs were largely passed on to customers. BASF said demand remained strong for automotive coatings and in Asia and Europe in particular, sales volumes grew overall.
