I wrote an editorial awhile back entitled "The Art and Science of Medicine-Keep it Our Specialty" referring to how the two must be carefully used together to offer our patients the very best care in very safe environments. Then at another time I offered that "politics is too important to leave it to the politicians." I suggested, no, implored, our colleagues to get involved with politics so we can be at the table when decisions influencing how we practice medicine are made. Today, I ask even more of you. Not only do I remind all of us to be vigilant in taking care of the details of our care and ask you to give up free time to talk to, inform and choose our policymakers, I now ask that we look beyond our specialties and look at the details of our patients' total care.
