Equine influenza virus can easily be isolated from pathological materials in embryonated chicken eggs However, a few reports indicate that some strains can grow in MDCK (Madian Darby Canine Kidney) established cell line. We have tried to grow A2 equine influenza virus (A/equi 2/Kentucky 81) in MDCK cells. The efficacy of virus multiplication or cell permissivity was examined directly by the immunoperoxidase method and indirectly by location of viral proteins in the preparations of different cell fractions. The cytopathic effect occurred within 24 h postinfection The infected MDCK cells with active virus replication have shown brown colouration in the immunohistological detection of viral antigens by the peroxidase method. The presence of A2 equine influenza virus proteins was detected by the dot-blot in the microsomal and nuclear cell fractions and in the fractions containing large fragments of cell membranes.
