Tacticity related microstructure modelling through stereospecific chemical modification of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), as studied in earlier work, is considered. It allows one to prepare model polymers having a known content of the local configurations at the end of isotactic and syndiotactic sequences, namely the mmr isotactic tetrad and the rrmr heterotactic pentad, respectively. The evolution of a series of properties (molecular interactions with solvents, esters and polyesters; T-g; beta relaxation and antiplasticization; and physical ageing) with the molecular microstructure of the model polymers, investigated in prior or current work, is described. In all the cases, specific correlations with mmr and rrmr and the conformations which can occur in them have been undeniably obtained, thereby providing original information as to the mechanism of some property-determining physical and physicochemical processes.
