Synthesis of silanes bearing cationic photopolymerizable groups was investigated by two routes: the first one is radical addition of mercaptopropyl triethyoxysilane (1) on allyl or vinyl functions of heterocyclic monomers, the second one is phase transfer catalysis of 1 with chloromethyl olefins. This study shows that mercaptosilane selectively reacts, under our experimental conditions, on double bonds by radical addition and on CH2-Cl functions by phase transfer catalysis. All the products were identified by H-1 and C-13 NMR. These new methods to prepare silane monomers led to the expected adducts with an excellent yield. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
