Netherlands-based Purac has developed what it claims is a simplified route to manufacturing lactides,an essential feedstock for production of polylac-tic acid(PLA)bioplastics.PLA,currendy produced commercially only by Cargill subsidiary NatureWorks in the US,has proved one of the most attractive bioplastics but capacity falls somewhat short of demand.
