PACKAGING US-based Free-donia, a research company, has reported in its new Active & Intelligent Packaging study that the demand for active and intelligent packaging is set to rise in the US by 8% annually, reaching $3.5bn (?2.5bn) by 2017. Active packaging serves functions such as controlling moisture, whilst intelligent packaging has the ability to communicate product changes and other information. Freedonia states new affordable versions of these products are now emerging. Freedonia analyst Esther Pa-levsky predicts: "Ongoing innovations will likely result in the commercialisation of new products and usage in applications that are currently unforeseen."
