Commission launches silicone implant inquiry

Detailed investigations into the safety of sili-cone-based breast implants have been ordered by the European Commission after an initial inquiry highlighted health concerns. These were raised by the EU's scientific committee on emerging and newly identified health risks, which was assessing allegations from French health authorities that France-based manufacturer Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) used "low-quality material (industrial silicone)" in implants.
