A new proposal to risk stratify urothelial carcinomas of the upper urinary tract (UTUCs) in a predefinitive treatment setting: Low-risk versus high-risk UTUCs

The 2013 European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines again contain dedicated evidence-based opinions on upper tract urothelial carcinomas (UTUCs), making the EAU the only scientific organisation to provide such specific guidance [1]. The success of the former version of these guidelines (ie, >170 citations in a 2-yr period) is in line with the growing interest in UTUCs in peer-reviewed literature. Extrapolating data from the PubMed Web site supports this notion. Between 1990 and 1999, there were 306 publications relating to UTUC, compared with 778 publications between 2000 and 2010. In addition, there is increased coverage at international meetings, with dedicated UTUC sessions at the American Urological Association, EAU, and World Congress of Endourology congresses.
