In a recent report, Siracusano et al provide additional evidence for an emerging functional role of polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocytes (PMNs) during bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunotherapy of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Such a role seems suggestive considering the vast numbers of PMNs observed in the urine of patients with BCG. However, few investigators have so far addressed this question, and studies on the mechanisms of BCG have focused on the cytotoxic activity of mononuclear effector cells such as CD4~+ and CD8~+ T or NK cells (for a review, see Bohle and Brandau ).
