Re: Metastatic prostate cancer-does treatment of the primary tumor matter?

The authors performed a comprehensive literature review to evaluate the role of surgical debulking and the outcome of advanced cancer. They reviewed multiple tumor cell types wherein debulking seems to have a favorable effect on outcome. They extrapolate some of this information to prostate cancer and also review the limited amount of information that does exist for adenocarcinoma of the prostate. They conclude that surgical debulking may favorably affect outcome in patients with advanced and even metastatic prostate cancer and raise the question of whether radical prostatectomy should be considered in this patient group, at least as part of a clinical trial.
