Modelling the evolution of the careser glacier (ortles-cevedale group) in 1970-1990

A mathematical model has been developed to describe the evolution of the mass and extension of an Alpine glacier; the model simulates simulates the viscous dynamics of the glacial mass. The model has been applied over a 20-year period (1970-1990) on the Careser Glacier (Ortles-Cevedale group), where topographical reliefs, topography of the bedrock, surface speed measurements and a significant amount of glaciological, climatological and hydrological data, ranging over a twenty year period, were available. Numerical simulation satisfactorily reproduced the evolution in the topography during the 1970-1980 and 1980-1990 periods and provided acceptable results both for the calculated internal stress, as well as the physical parameter values identified.
