Continental Tire North America Inc.(CTNA)sai29 June that it will suspentyre production indefinitely at its troubleMayfield,Kentucky,plant,on 31 Dec 2004.Conti has previously describeMayfielas its highest-cost US tyre-making site.Its strategy to turn the US business back into profit demands more use of low-cost manufacturing locations,an approach it has adoptewith success in Europe.CTNA saiit has no plans to close the Mayfielfacility,anwill continue rubber mixing anwarehousing operations there.
