Two years on, about 10% of tyre imports still break EU REACH rules

Tyres imported into the EU still breach EU rules on the content of carcinogenic oils, A second round of tests on tyres produced within the EU and those imported has shown that there has been minimal improvement in the compliance of imported tyres.A first round of tests completed in February 2011showed that around 11 percent of tyres tested contained high quantities of the illegal materials. In the most recent round of testing, completed in September 2011, that figure has improved by just one percentage point, to 10 percent.In both rounds of testing, all tyres produced within the EU borders were fully compliant, and all non-compliant tyres were imported.
