Hypersensitivity from intravenous iron products

The term delayed-type drug hypersensitivity reaction is used loosely to describe a myriad of clinical syndromes caused by a variety of different drugs. Characterization of mechanisms is difficult because the same drug has the potential to activate different arms of the adaptive immune system via diverse chemical pathways. Layered on top of this is the recent discovery of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules as important susceptibility factors for certain reactions.
