There has been a large increase in the number of publications dealing with the detection and characterization of free nucleic acids, reflecting the interest in this field. The third international congress devoted to circulating nucleic acids in serum and plasma (CNAPS III) covered the following areas: DNA in cancer, fetal DNA, RNA in cancer and benign diseases, fetal RNA, and serum proteomic approaches. This meeting report summarizes the state of the art in the field.
