Noor and Ortiz-Barrientos (2006) disagree with our conclusions from studies of D. pseudoobscura and D. persimilis in mating chambers that the overall sexual isolation is not. significantly different in sympatric combinations of the two species than in allopatric ones. They analyzed the PSI (pair sexual isolation) coefficients of Rolan-Alvarez and Caballero (2000) for our data on matings between D. pseudoobscura females and D. persimilis males and reported a statistically significant difference in these PSI coefficients from sympatric and allopatric combinations of the species. This finding does not mean, however, that the overall sexual isolation between D. pseudoobscura and D. persimilis is greater in sympatry than in allopatry, because gene flow among populations of the two species has likely been extensive enough to spread any genes underlying sexual isolation throughout the species.
