The present paper deals with the effect of free convection on melting in cylindrical containers.Phase change heat transfer due to freezing and melting is an important phenomenon in energy storage systems.In the present study,thermocouples have been used for temperature distribution in the phase change materials(PCM)and the interface position was found from the temperature profile.The experimental work has been done using n-octadecane as the PCM.The study pertains to the effect of L/D and superheat on melting rates.
