Recently the expression "AD" has been used increasingly to refer only to agricultural waste anaerobic digestion schemes. But anaerobic digestion has been in use since as early as 1895 in the municipal water industry - albeit its extensive use was introduced considerably later - and it is here in the municipal wastewater sector that AD has found its greatest application.
