Turner Memorial Lecture 2005* Cut and engraved glass in the Islamic world between the Eighth and the Eleventh centuries

Between the eighth and the 11th centuries CE, glass workers in the Central Islamic Lands used rotating, abrasive-fed wheels and hand-held tools to produce great quantities of cut and engraved glass. While much of their output is pedestrian, the very best is magnificent. My intention is to illustrate a selection of their outstanding products and to describe what we know about where and when these objects were made. Although we know a great deal, there is far more that we do not know and this is a report on work in progress rather than a mature history of Islamic cut glass.
