Although intumescent coatings are widely used to protect wood and metal against fire, plastics are normally protected by adding materials to the bulk polymer, which may impair its strength. Waterborne intumescent coatings were shown to achieve a high standard of fire retardancy on two types of thermoplastic in two distinct types of fire test.
