US firms reveal tough Q1 as feedstock costs soar

Feedstock prices look like hammering US chemical company results for the first quarter (Q1). Houston-based Lyondell reported a quarterly loss of US113m, more than double the US55m loss of a year earlier and slightly worse than analyst predictions. It complained of margins eroded by soaring oil and natural gas prices. Attempts by Lyondell and the joint venture Equistar to pass on higher prices were too slow to offset the increased costs.
