Experiments started with Ainsley Iggo on alimentary tract receptors (1962-72).

Ainsley was one of my lecturers in the Integrated Honours BSc (Physiology) course (1959-1960) and later supervised my PhD work (1962-1967). Following Ainsley's appointment to the Chair of Veterinary Physiology in the University of Edinburgh, our mutual interests in ruminant forestomach movements merged and I became Ainsley's first postgraduate student. Ainsley was intent on recording the neural activity emerging from 'gastric centres' in the medulla oblongata in single vagal motor fibres responsible for evoking the fore-stomach movements. Using electrophysiological techniques in halothane-anaesthetized sheep, we recorded patterns of activity corresponding in time, frequency and duration with the movements of two of the fore-stomach compartments, the reticulum and the rumen (Iggo and Leek, 1967a).
