This paper is concerned with the future development of the AES (All Electric Ship) concept. A review of the developments of AES technologies, incorporating IFEP (integrated full electric propulsion) concepts, prime movers and energy storage options in conjunction with RN warships, is given. The implementation strategy for electric ship technologies is then described, and the challenges facing marine engineering development in furthering them in future warship systems are discussed. Issues that will have to be addressed by the marine engineering development programme (MEDP) are outlined.
