It's been a hard winter here in South Central Pennsylvania, with average temperatures for February some 15°F below freezing, the lowest on record. Normally, in the last week of March, the first dandelions come into flower, although we are not certainwhat to expect this year, especially after the harsh winter of 2014 delayed the nectar flow by two weeks. Ordinarily the exuberant yellow of the petals is a lighthouse for the honey bees whereas the mere presence of the blossom is a vital portent for the beekeeper.
