14 U.S. agbiotech firms up R&D spending 3.2%

Agbiotech companies nudged up research and development (R&D), spending a measly 3.2% in fiscal 1994,accordingto Bio/Technology's survey of 14 firms (Table 1), This relatively small R&D increase paled in comparison to the astonishing 43 6% R&D expansion authorized by these companies in fiscal 1993 and the 39.6% R&D jump reported in fiscal 1992. Last year, agbiotech companies laid out a total of 79 million dollar on R&D, for an average of 5.6 million dollar apiece.
