One thing is certain, every year is different and presents different opportunities and challenges. The season has been very mixed with a wonderful early spring followed by a mammoth June gap and July provided some good warm foraging weather. Strong colonies gathered a good crop that by now you will probably have extracted. September is the time when we need to make sure our bees are well prepared for the winter ahead. What we do now will be important for successful overwintering and the reduction ofwinter losses. Hives need to be sound and weather proof, the bees strong with young vigorous queens, disease free, varroa levels under control and winter stores in place. With this all attended to we can sit back and cogitate on beekeeping in general. What is happening and where is it all going?
