Crown boards have a number of uses, apart from the obvious one. When removing supers for extraction, put them on a crown board to keep combs clean, and another on top to keep robbing bees out. The same arrangement will stop drips of honey on the flooras you carry the supers to the extracting room and will also stop bits of wax from falling when you carry supers away for storage. With suitable modifications they are often used as clearer boards and it is convenient to cut a small slot to make an entrance and then use the board to divide a colony beneath from an artificial swarm, or a nuc, above. We often talk of changing the hive floors in the early spring but for the same reasons it is good practice the change the crown board, and the brood chamber too.
